People saying "it doesn't matter that he's not white because he passes for white" makes me want to rage punch the people saying it, right in the babymaker. That's erasing a huge part of his identity based on WHAT he looks like rather than what he actually is. Ugh.

I'm half Asian and half white and I look more white than Asian. But being Asian is very important to me because it's a link to my mother, and that entire side of my identity, and for someone to tell me that doesn't matter (which is what I get from those morons saying that about Keanu) because of the tint of my skin and (non)tilt of my eyes? FUCK THEM.

Keanu is part of that mixed club so if he wants to play a character that figures prominently in a part of his heritage he should be able to do it without fucking morons debating the merits of his choices based on THEIR perceptions. FUCKING FUCKITY FUCK.

That said though, Keanu isn't part-Japanese, so even playing a British-Japanese character like he apparently is in this film is not entire problem-free.

The only thing that people should be bitching about is Keanu's inability to sound British. I still cringe during Bram Stocker's Dracula.

I don't think it's a problem with fans, but more of a problem with Hollywood. Hollywood does, from what we know, treat Keanu like a white man. His race isn't something that is addressed in movies and very rarely in iterviews. Now, I'm not saying his race something that should be brought up all the time because it's nobody's business, but considering how poorly Asian (particularly male Asian) actors are treated in Hollywood, it's glaringly obvious he is either passing as white or Hollwyood considers him white enough to play lead roles.

That's not to say Keanu doesn't deserve this role. But I'd be willing to bet the only reason he was even offered the role is because he looks white enough for Hollywood audiences. Hollywood has a habit of casting vaguely ethnic-looking white men in non-white roles (Johnny Depp as Tonto, anyone?) so I wouldn't be surprised if Keanu had gotten this part even if he was 100% white.

I'd also be willing to bet Keanu would be nowhere near as successful as he is if he did have a more Asian-esque appearance. And that in itself is extremely problematic imo.

Yeah I didn't even realize there was an issue to begin with. It's as though people are just looking for reasons to bring race into anything.

He always looked Hapa to me. He's just as much a representative of asian and other minority actors as many others are in hollywood.
