I agree, and what irks me more than anything is that beauty is such a gendered concept. When people say 'all women are beautiful!' there's always the underlying assumption that they should be. In men, good looks are a plus in the way that, say, a talent for singing or cricket or stand-up comedy is a plus. It's certainly good to have it, but it's still considered an exceptional feature rather than a basic requirement for masculinity. For women it's different, and that bothers me. For women, beauty has a connotation of 'worth' and there's something deeply wrong with that.

This is so true! Like "pretty" as a compliment for girls is way more common than "handsome" for boys.
