Re: Beauty vs other things

I dunno, the definition of "beautiful" is pretty much just "pleasing in some ambiguous way", not "pleasing in a strictly prescribed way". Saying someone is beautiful isn't saying they're young, or healthy, or perfectly symmetrical, or well-proportioned, or smooth-skinned, or fine-boned, or any of that. It's just saying they're appealing, and everyone has something that makes them pleasing to the eye, or to the mind, or to any of our senses.

Tumblr, in its usual shallow, ham-fisted way, seems to be trying to reclaim a word that's too frequently used in the narrowest possible fashion. I don't want to de-emphasize the pleasure of finding appeal - and therefore beauty - in all kinds of people and things just because some asshole way back when claimed it for sunsets and good genes only.
