Well, going out of your way to be like "Hey everyone! You know that one thing that happened? I don't care about it!" I have to agree that's a bit silly. But going "Please shut up about it; I am so sick of hearing and seeing it everywhere," that's a bit different. That's reasonable.

Exactly. When real news gets covered up by "Yet another perspective on so-and-so's baby", it makes me want to lash out too. I may have cared the first time I heard about it, but now we're bordering on ridiculous.

Exactly this. It's especially bad with B list (or less) celebrity deaths for me. It often looks as if people just like having something to wail about and I've never felt that was about a celebrity death as much as I did with the guy from Glee. Half the people I saw posting about how heartbroken they were spelled his name wrong. -_-

I'd even go a half step farther. Bringing it up yourself to talk about how much you don't care is, yes, silly. Responding to somebody else bringing it up with a polite request to talk about something else because you're not interested and keep hearing about it is totally reasonable. But if the coverage of the event is inescapable and ubiquitous, as it so often is, I'm ready to forgive the person who snaps and puts up that tumblr post or whatever that says, Do you know how much I don't care? Is there anyone here who wants to talk about something other than a stranger's baby, or do I need to check myself into isolation until the hysteria is over? That person isn't bringing it up to tell you they don't care; that person is responding to the other people who keep bringing it up. And it's a safe bet that even when they snap, they're annoying OP less than OP and the rest of the world has been annoying them. After all, by definition there are a lot fewer of them.

I don't get this point though, why don't those people just not look? Ignore the posts on Facebook or Tumbler or whichever forum they are complaining about. There are posts on FB I loathe, but I just either hide them, or scroll past. I'm hardly going to ask the person not to post whatever they like. Also I would feel I was being rude if I did a general post asking people to shut up about something. If they are all interested, and I'm not, well I will just keep quiet about my opinion and let them enjoy it.

Because it can become almost impossible to not look. Sure, you can scroll past all the posts, but unless you're awfully good with filters you're still going be seeing a metric ton of what amounts to spam. You can't avoid it if you want, for example, serious news, because these days even real news sites have this shit all over their pages as clickbait. Or something.

So no, I'm not going to blame the person who has one more person or news source try to talk to them about the celebrity news of the moment and responds with, I do not give a flying fuck about the Royal Baby. I can't imagine why anyone would make an entire top-level post to say that, but responding to comments in a venue that's not all about celebrities, or adding a comment to the nine billionth reblog of a post that's tagged so that it shows up in non-celebrity-centric feeds? I'm only surprised more people don't do it.

How is "Please shut up about it; I am so sick of hearing and seeing it everywhere" POSSIBLY different? The words are different, sure, but unless you're typing in your sleep or whatever you're still making a special effort to say it.
