Best screen versions?

Not necessarily films that conform to the letter and spirit of their respective original sources, just anything that was based on something else and turned out to be good, either because it adds something new to the canon, interprets it in a different way, or changes every possible aspect altogether.

I saw it for the first time in years recently, and I'm convinced the Fight Club movie holds up better than the book. Iirc even the author likes the movie ending better than the book's.

Aren't The Godfather, Jaws and The Shining the classic examples of that? I think the movie versions of A Room with a View and Maurice are much, much better than the books. The actors bring life to the cardboard, schematic characters.

I enjoy the movie version of My Sister's Keeper because the ending was better. :|

I much prefer the Wicked musical to the book... no offense book-fans.

The musical is awesome. The book is weirdly written to the point where as I was reading it I couldn't actually tell if I was enjoying it or not. I'm not even sure the author knew what was going on in large swathes of it.

I don't care what people say, I'll always think the film version of Ella Enchanted was better.

I'd say Primary Colors is one of the best book to movie adaptations I've seen, because it work great as a film without even having read the book. Same with Maurice.

And having read all the Twilight books, I think the movies are fantastic by comparison, especially given the thin line they were treading: having to stay true to the source material (for the fans), but being aware of how whack-a-do the source material was, and at least trying to reinterpret in sensible way.

Hunger Games was also pretty well done in my opinion, although they did cut things that I thought were pretty valuable to the story (the amount of damage done to Peeta's leg and the ultimate consequences) for the sake of keeping the rating down.
