I'd say Primary Colors is one of the best book to movie adaptations I've seen, because it work great as a film without even having read the book. Same with Maurice.

And having read all the Twilight books, I think the movies are fantastic by comparison, especially given the thin line they were treading: having to stay true to the source material (for the fans), but being aware of how whack-a-do the source material was, and at least trying to reinterpret in sensible way.

Hunger Games was also pretty well done in my opinion, although they did cut things that I thought were pretty valuable to the story (the amount of damage done to Peeta's leg and the ultimate consequences) for the sake of keeping the rating down.
