What is death? were the boys' final words, before he slipped away. His death had left a permanent scar his father's conscience. It may not have been entirely his fault that his son had skipped class that day to go exploring where he knew better not to be, but that cross was already carried.

"Death is the only constant thing in this world." The well-wishers had told the grieving father at the boy's funeral, before they shuffled off to their homes and their families. Death could not be avoided or changed. And there by the freshly turned earth, where the boy now lay, his father whispered one word. "No."

That boy would become the first of many to pass and rise again. The first vampire.
