I'm living in a coed building for the summer, so for the first time in my life, I'm sharing a communal bathroom with the opposite sex. Occasionally I'll be in one stall and the really creepy guy next door will come into the other one. Then he does something that utterly baffles me. He usually lets out a small fart, then he just exhales loudly a few times and leaves. I can't figure out what the hell he's doing. Is this something that can easily be explained by someone familiar with male bathroom habits, or is it just some weird ritual he has?

He's trying to summon the dark lord of farts. He who sits on the stanky throne of gassy shadows. Be wary, the lord of farts is very evil, and very smelly.

Honestly, my first thought was yoga.

Maybe he doesn't want to fart in front of people so he goes to the bathroom?

this was my thought as well. it would be a fairly private place, and if someone smells it it wouldn't be out of place from the normal bathroom smells after one has used it

Please don't say that, I'm already creeped out enough by him and my anxiety problems don't make it any better.

Sorry, but what do you want us to say? You asked for reasons why and I gave you some. If his bathroom activities make you so uncomfortable that you have anxiety issues because some anonymous asshole on the internet jokingly speculated that it may (most likely not) be sexual then you should 1.) report to your RA that your suitemate is making you severally uncomfortable and you are worried about your mental (and possibly physical) wellbeing, and/or 2.) see someone about this issue and it's affect on your anxiety, if at all possible.

We don't know what's on his mind or what his life circumstances are or have been that may cause him to do this, so this whole thread is pointless speculation designed to likely make you more anxious because we have no answers for you.

When I have worries that I think are probably irrational, I ask people about it because it helps to hear from someone else that it's irrational. When I'm worried that a complete unknown might turn out to be the one possibility I'm afraid of, I go to other people because they will most likely come up with a whole bunch of other, more reasonable answers that don't scare me. So that's why it upsets me when they joke about the worst case scenario instead. I should have made it clearer in my OP just how creeped out I am (for basically no reason other than my paranoia blowing things out of proportion), but I didn't want "my problems" to be the focus of the thread.

Maybe he likes the smell of his farts but his roommate doesn't? Maybe he's constipated? Does he flush? Are the exhalations short and rapid paced or long drawn out exhalations?

He usually doesn't flush, and as gross as this is to say, I never hear anything other than what I described. No sounds of 1 or 2. They're sort of in between, like a cross between sighs and a much slower version of panting.

I may be a massive virgin, but even I know he'd have to be in there longer than 5-10 seconds for that.

You're probably right though I've learned to write NOTHING off when it comes to humans and sex.

That is weird. But I've learned after a couple of years in a TMI comm that sometimes people are just inexplicably weird in the bathroom. No particular motivation, usually pretty harmless, just that's where they feel safe to unleash all their odd grossness. I imagine you'll encounter stranger before the summer is up.

Could be he's trying and failing to poop. College food doesn't usually do wonders for a person's regularity.
