[Picture is a photograph of wooden pencils under a few graphical editing filters.]

My journey from fandom back to original writing... important but still bloody painful. I'd probably never have made it if it didn't hurt so much. It still does sometimes.

I need to do that, myself, anon.

I should print this pic out and hang it above my keyboard.

I want to try making this transition soon... though I'm kind of using "can I get this goddamn fanfic finished" as a litmus test for my ability to finish an original writing project.

As someone who's made the transition after years of writing fanfic, and who has sold some short stories here and there for actual cashy money, I'm here to tell you that it can be done. And it's extremely satisfying.

Yeah I've begun this process myself. And I agree with you, it's painful, but extremely satisfying.

The challenges are very different from those of fic, but so are the rewards. I find it easier to create original work just for the sake of creating.

I remember being weirded out by the opposite process a few years ago - returning to fandom after experimenting with original stuff and with nonfiction for a while. I remember being surprised to be complimented on how well I was emulating canon characterisations, like I was being rated on that quality, when really that wasn't why I was there at all? idk if that makes sense, sorry.

I find it harder to get through narratives in OF, I guess because with fanfics you can fall back on canon as a framework for everything. And, well, writing is such a ragbag of different skills - fanfic has left me with an uneven skillset, and I feel like it's hard to bring those neglected skills up to par when many of the other skills are already working really well. :/

I didn't know you had to choose one or the other. Maybe that's what I'm doing wrong.

You don't.

That being said... most people only have so much creative energy. If you're throwing most of it into fanworks, your original work may suffer. The opposite is also true. It's possible to strike a balance, but it's certainly not easy.

I envy people who can do that.
