I didn't know you had to choose one or the other. Maybe that's what I'm doing wrong.

You don't.

That being said... most people only have so much creative energy. If you're throwing most of it into fanworks, your original work may suffer. The opposite is also true. It's possible to strike a balance, but it's certainly not easy.

I envy people who can do that.
