It was added by some people who thought that just writing "trans" was specific to transsexual, or something.

Since its popularization in the 90s "transgender" has been intended and used by most as a catch-all umbrella term to cover a wide range of gender expressions, and "trans" was usually used as a shortened form of that. So "trans" without an asterisk is already a vague catch-all term that encompasses transsexuality but is not limited to it. The asterisk really isn't necessary.
