Slight OT: Ignorant questions is ignorant

Why an asterisk is used in "trans*"?

I'd like to know this too.

It's to save from having to write out "transgender and transperson" each time. The asterisk encompasses both of those and saves from offending anyone by choosing only one the two. Whichever a person chooses, it's likely to offend someone. writing it as trans* also offends some people but it's common and functional enough that most people aren't offended by it and just ignore the ones who are.

Not trans*, but I think the asterisk is used as an umbrella to encompass a whole range of different terms (transgendered, transexual, etc), because it's simpler and doesn't leave people out.

But don't quote me on that.

It was added by some people who thought that just writing "trans" was specific to transsexual, or something.

Since its popularization in the 90s "transgender" has been intended and used by most as a catch-all umbrella term to cover a wide range of gender expressions, and "trans" was usually used as a shortened form of that. So "trans" without an asterisk is already a vague catch-all term that encompasses transsexuality but is not limited to it. The asterisk really isn't necessary.
