How is that even the same thing? A person doing that is clearly just homophobic. They would have no problem at all finding representation in media but instead they choose to take away from what few queer representations exist instead. This is hateful and erasing in nature.

Trans* representation in traditional media is terrible, and few and far between. I certainly can't speak for everyone, but for the trans* writers I know who engage in writing trans* fic, the very creative exercise of writing these stories helps them tremendously to cope with their personal experience. At the same time, it doesn't hurt anyone. Cis people are certainly not affected one bit by a small number of fanfic writers portraying some characters as trans*, even if it's characters they love, because they can easily find cis representation elsewhere, in fandom and beyond.
