..maybe never a best friend that is worthy to be called one no matter the sex

I don't think what you said is entirely true but there is surely some truth to that when talking about those exhausting slash fans that seem to accept no other possible explanation but "romance!" those people and the way they react to certain scenes make me think they never had a best friend, otherwise they wouldn't think there is something weird or suspicious in the way the characters act around each other.
