Here's the thing, OP. The people who ship K/S probably have plenty of other friendships in media that they see as purely platonic. Pairings that other people ship. Because sometimes your 'just friends' is somebody else's 'ghnnnuhh!'.

This is not rocket surgery, and is the reason why in RL circles of friends many people pair off in various dynamic ways but it's a rare friendship group where everyone's boffing everyone or where nobody's boffing anybody.

I know people who have very dear friendships, and yet never write anyone platonically. Not because they don't believe in friendship, but because they just think it's easier, and/or really like the pairings. I don't necessarily agree that romance is easier, and I don't really get shipping every pair of best friends, but I don't think it means they've never had friends or don't value friendship.

I do think there's a tendency to conflate chemistry with sexual chemistry but Kirk/Spock was the original slash ship so I'm going to have to give this secret a big thumbs down.

For every single one of my girl friends I have had multiple people ask if we were dating or if I had a secret crush on them. We are super, super close.

And yet, I ship Kirk/Spock, McCoy/Spock, and Kirk/McCoy. All the friend ships, all of them. I don't care if they're friends or romantically involved. I like either relationship.

So I guess my existence proves you wrong.

It's called subtext, OP. Just because you don't see it in the canon for a particular pairing doesn't mean that no one else who has ever had a same-gender friend does.
