I don't like knowing anything at all about the authors of the books I read tbh. It's too easy for their personalities and actions to make me dislike their work :\

Ditto.

Except for Terry Pratchet, because my god, that man is amazing ;w;

(Anonymous) 2013-08-06 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
That's my entire approach to fandom. I don't want to know about the writers.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-06 07:30 am (UTC)(link)
Too true.

Pretty much anyone that is involved in a creative process (writers, douchey actors/actresses, directors, bands, etc.) are on my ignore list. Finding out that folks whose work you love and admire suck as people can ruin your fan experience and the work itself.

Same here.

Of course some authors happen to be very truly nice people (PTerry seems to be a wonderfully patient guy and truly generous with his time - possibly too generous, even) but it doesn't change the fact that I'd really rather not know anything about the writers of the books I read so I can enjoy/dislike/judge what I read based on its own merits.

I hate this modern thing where authors are required to do signing tours an interviews to promote their books. If I do not care for the books/authors, their are a waste of my time and money (since such PR expenses end up padding the price of the next book I buy from that publisher), and if I like that author's books, I'd rather he/she got more free time to think up another book for me to enjoy than waste time traveling and/or answering stupid questions.

Or even worse, get so many stupid questions they end up thinking their readers are stupid and modify their writing accordingly

I so agree. It's nice to hear it from a reader's perspective, though. :)

[Picture is two men kissing. Both have short dark brown hair and light olive skin. One is wearing a white top and the other a dark T-shirt.]

Lately I dread discovering that gay romance authors I enjoy used to be in my old fandoms. Some were real jerks. I just want to enjoy reading without reminders of old elitist crap. [sad face emoticon]

Picture unrelated; not mine.

I think I have some old fandom issues I haven't been able to forget. [sad face emoticon]

Do you have a list of authors, OP?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-06 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
I never know what the hell "elitist" is supposed to mean in fandom. Besides "somebody did something I didn't like that one time."

Is this something that happens with you often?

How would you learn this?

But honestly, finding out bad things about authors/writers, actors, directors, and so on and having that ruin their work for me is the reason I purposefully keep myself ignorant of these people. That and I don't care. I don't want to know about their lives. My sole interest is in their talent as whatever they are. But yeah, this attitude has kept things simple and easy for me. Maybe you should try it?

Tell that to fandom about people such as Cassandra Clare.

Dunno, if they're really horrible I'd rather know about it, Polanski for instance.

*shrug* Her work isn't that great to begin with and a lot of the bad things about her directly relate to her work, such as plagiarism. Which is something I wouldn't want to support. But just knowing someone used to be in an old fandom of yours is different. That has nothing to do with their work.

Also, my advice applied to the future, not to things they already know.

If something directly affects their work then I would want to know but if their work has no connection then I don't want to know. For Polanski it affects his work for me.

Just saying, this is a gorgeously laid out secret.

[personal profile] ex_mek82 2013-08-06 11:16 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, echoing people and saying this is the reason why I don't learn more about my favorite authors (and artists, since I'm mostly into comics), or follow them on places like Tumblr or Twitter.
