He didn't kill Abigail to see what would happen, though? He killed her because she "knew too much" and could've implicated him in several murders, and he's pretty self-interested, if nothing else. So, as you say, she "posed a threat to his survival".

(Unless you mean Abigail's friend, but she called her mother a bitch, so.)
