I don't think respecting people's right to create fanworks is really at odds with wishing people would actually improve their skill. TBH, I'm in pretty much the same boat as you - I'm not going to say anybody can't create what they want to, but I will say that some people really need to learn to up their skills a bit. Of course, that all depends on the author - I'm not going to judge a 12-year-old ESL student with only a few English fics the same way I'd judge a 22-year-old English-speaking college graduate with a ton of fics to their name. It's just, at a certain point, there's just no excuse for ignorance.
