Nah it's okay to mock in private. You should come to the f!s livestreams, they record badfic readings sometimes.

Also remember a lot of people post bad stuff on ao3 deliberately because they think it's funny.

Huh. I don't flame them, but if your plot/spelling/characterization is shit, I sure as hell won't be reading. And yes, I understand the aggravation with the crop of bad fics on Ao3. ESPECIALLY ASSHOLES WHO TAG LIKE 50 THINGS! This isn't Tumblr stop tagging your feels.

Urgggh I am feeling this because I'm seeing a popular tumblr user right now posting this fanfic that is a hot mess and then I notice the number of comments and kudos they're getting and I am confounded.

I enjoy laughing at bad fic more than I get worked up over it. I only get irritated if it's a bad fic that comes highly or constantly recced as a good fic.

I do the same. I'd never let the authors know how I really feel, but yelling at the computer screen is surprisingly therapeutic.

I don't think respecting people's right to create fanworks is really at odds with wishing people would actually improve their skill. TBH, I'm in pretty much the same boat as you - I'm not going to say anybody can't create what they want to, but I will say that some people really need to learn to up their skills a bit. Of course, that all depends on the author - I'm not going to judge a 12-year-old ESL student with only a few English fics the same way I'd judge a 22-year-old English-speaking college graduate with a ton of fics to their name. It's just, at a certain point, there's just no excuse for ignorance.

I hate when bad fics have those deep artsy titles that are always in lowercase. I've come to associate lowercase titles with high quality fics and when it doesn't match up, it annoys me.

Everyone having a right to create brings with it everyone having a right to criticise.

Just don't be too much of a jerk about it (minor jerkiness is natural, just don't be mean to authors).

In principle, I support the right of every fan to create fanworks at their own level of skill and with however much effort they choose, because this is all for fun, and fanwork quality is largely subjective anyway.

In practice, I spend a lot of time shouting "Learn to spell!" and "That is an indescribably awful story premise!" and "Nothing about this is a good idea!" at my computer, and wishing I could throw things at the authors.

Bonus Secret: I deeply resent the avalanche of crap you get on Archive Of Our Own these days, and blame tumblr for being a bad fic platform and driving all the newbies there.

I'm just sitting here laughing my ass off at all the people on my f-list/dashboard/etc who once claimed that AO3 was ~so superior~ because there was ~no badfic~, unlike that stinky FF.Net. It's okay to not like bad spelling, horrible grammar, OOC-ness, and weird plots. Just don't be a dick about it to the authors.

I could have written this exact thing myself. I'm mostly okay with it. I'd start to feel guilty if I actually wrote those reviews or heckled people, but I don't, I just yell at the monitor.

If there's any part of the badness that it's easy to explain how to fix, I tend to do so. I don't know why so few people do this. It helps that my corner of AO3 is way more comment-happy than most, and over 95% of the comments I post are positive ones.

Resenting bad fic on Ao3 does seem a bit silly, if only that it stands to reason that any platform that grew so big would have a huge glut of bad stuff - probably most of it. It was inevitable with or without Tumblr's influence.

You know, I get that most fanfic writers are still learning their skills, and that's fine.

But.

In my fandom, I'm seeing more and more fics posted with statements like, "I could have polished this up but I can't be bothered because I wanted to post it right away." WTF? If you know it needs polishing, how can you bear to post it?

You are not alone, OP. In my main fandom, it's gotten to the point where even the place that was my go-to place for good fic has been overrun with thirteen to sixteen-year-olds, and is now 90% badfic that I don't want to read. I don't harass or flame the authors, but do backbutton away from their fic faster than a bullet.

Wanting to throw things at authors would be an exaggeration for me, but I definitely feel like this sometimes.

This makes me glad I keep to the edges of fandom in general and I'm not talking about the bad fic. Bad fic is a lot easier to avoid than people taking small things way to seriously.

Eh, if you're having fun doing it and aren't being mean to the author then have at it, I guess.

I honestly can't bring myself to care much as to have a huge reaction to it in either direction. I can't get angry but I can't really laugh at it either. Generally if something isn't to my standards I just backbutton out and move on.

However, I do enjoy ripping movies to absolute shreds so I can understand the fun of critiquing something you think is bad.

So yeah, have fun as long as you're not hurting anyone.

Closing badfic is always a useful skill, OP. It doesn't matter what archive you're on. Getting upset that 99% of fanfic is terrible is going to exhaust you very quickly.
