If there's any part of the badness that it's easy to explain how to fix, I tend to do so. I don't know why so few people do this. It helps that my corner of AO3 is way more comment-happy than most, and over 95% of the comments I post are positive ones.

I fear that if I did that in my corners of fandom, I'd be eaten alive by fourteen-year-olds (or people with that level of maturity) who don't like the idea that their creations are less than perfect.

I've found that commenting is usually not worth it. I had one author get highly offended once because I mentioned in an otherwise positive comment that she'd misused commas in her story. And the ones who don't get offended tend to respond with some variety of "I'm just writing for myself"/"I don't use betas"/"It's just fanfic; who cares?" and don't bother changing anything, either in that particular fic or in their future stories.
