I've found that commenting is usually not worth it. I had one author get highly offended once because I mentioned in an otherwise positive comment that she'd misused commas in her story. And the ones who don't get offended tend to respond with some variety of "I'm just writing for myself"/"I don't use betas"/"It's just fanfic; who cares?" and don't bother changing anything, either in that particular fic or in their future stories.
