I don't know, as a writer I have big, serious fics that I put a lot of thought and work into, but sometimes I feel like writing down an idea I had, even if I don't necessarily have the time to edit it several times - the occasional kinkmeme fill, a quick fluffy fic, some smut. I wouldn't consider those fics bad, just not as good as what I can write when I try harder. I know that many people who enjoy that pairing are still going to enjoy those fics, that's why I post them, but at the same time I feel it's only fair to warn readers that this is not a really serious fic that I put a lot of work in. So I warn them that it's not beta read and might contain typos or could have used a bit more work. That way everyone can decide if they WANT to read a nice, but probably not extraordinary little fic about a ship they like, or if they'd rather skip that and only read high quality stuff.

Well, fair enough. I don't have a problem with what you've just described - especially when the fic is a quickie by definition, a super-shortfic, or a piece that's more 'scenario' than story.

I do feel sad when I see this happening more and more often, especially when a particular fic has tremendous promise and could have been turned into a highly memorable story if the author had put in a little more effort.

Mind you, in my fandom the fanfics are getting shorter and shorter. Anything over 1,000 words is really rare now! So maybe it's not surprising that this trend is happening in parallel.

Come to think of it, I'm glad at least that you and other authors 'warn' for it. Thank you for that!
