I'm just sitting here laughing my ass off at all the people on my f-list/dashboard/etc who once claimed that AO3 was ~so superior~ because there was ~no badfic~, unlike that stinky FF.Net. Well guess what, my friends? The younger kids and newbies and other casual writers are all caught up with you now. Run, fanfic elitists, run!

(Anonymous) 2013-08-05 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Mostly because they opened accounts and now all the ff.net losers crosspost and clog up the site with crap.

I've read worse crapfic on AO3 than FF.Net. I think it's because of the recent purges and most crapfic tends to be really bad, explicit Mary Sue+favorite character/author porn.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-06 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
All of the crapfic I've read on AO3 I find out the author originally posted on ff.net and now is crossposting.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-06 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, we knew it would happen. We just enjoyed not having to wade through all the crap for that brief and shining moment before it got easy to have an account there.

With you there, anon. Always knew the moment would come to soon (and now is here, alas).

Yeah man, AO3 has gone to the shitpile just like ff.net has. It may be even worse than ff.net now, actually.

At least you don't have to read through a gazillion self-indulgent Tumblr tags and lines of #FEELS #lol loki and tony eat blueberry pie #clint is a kitchen god #natasha needs her morning coffee #who's a good boy thor's a good boy #SO MANY FEELS on ff.net.

Otoh, filtering's pretty dire on ff.net. I hate the Tumblr-style tags on AO3 with a burning passion, too, but the more substantive tags are so well suited to how I prefer to browse fic. (They're not perfect: I really wish that primary and secondary pairings could be split into separate categories and that there were an easier way to filter out crossovers. But, overall, AO3's tagging system works better for me than any other site's does.)

(Anonymous) 2013-08-06 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
This. The searching and filtering on ao3 are so, so, so much better (or at least they make more sense to me) than any other site's.

Boolean searching apparently is enabled via the "Search Within Results" field, if that helps any? (For example, entering NOT "Supernatural" NOT "The Avengers" NOT "Attack on Titan"... actually cuts the Pacific Rim tag down to mostly non-crossover fic.)

*nods* You can use a minus sign to get the same result, and I have done that from time to time. I find that, for me, it's mostly not worth the trouble of picking off crossover fandoms one by one, though.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-06 07:57 am (UTC)(link)
It's worse because they don't have a filter for crossovers. I'm so damn angry that I have to bookmark a -character tag for a show that SHE'S NOT EVEN ON.

The first time I heard of AO3 - this would have been a few years back - I heard it was invitation-only and intended to collect 'quality' fanfics. Was this ever the case?

Actual question, because until I saw how fandomsecrets reacted to the place I was under the impression it was a response to places like ff.net (which I actually find convenient, if unwieldy when it comes to searching for...anything. Although their new search functions look, perhaps, promising).

No, it's always been meant for every kind and quality of fanfic - it's still technically in open beta (and earlier was in closed beta), hence invite-only to keep the number of users manageable for testing.
