Can Voice Casting Ruin Your Enjoyment of an Animated Movie?

[personal profile] queerwolf 2013-08-05 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I DVR'd Rise of the Guardians the other day since I've never seen it. Started to watch it and made a face at the TV when I realized Chris Pine voiced Jack Frost. Love Jack's character design, but even though I like CP as an actor, I've never liked his voice. I want to watch the rest of the movie, of course, but I really think I'd like it more if Jack had a different VA.

This ever happen to anyone else?

I wouldn't say it ruined my enjoyment, but Aladdin's voice was really annoying.

Yeah, that has happened to me with some animes before, if that counts (Meroko from Full Moon o Sagashite comes to mind - she's pretty much my favourite character in the manga, but I can't even watch the anime because of her VA). Some voices are just not nice to listen to... it's fine when they're not talking, but when they are, it can be impossible to ignore. -_-

It sucks that your enjoyment of something has been a bit sapped because of this, I hope the film is good regardless!

If I recognize an actor's voice from other roles, it sometimes does that. Mel Gibson in Pocahontas is the only on eI can think of, but I know there are others.

I rewatched the first thirty minutes (The only part I can stand), and it didn't bother me as much as the trailers did, although I still went 'WTF Is Chris Pine's voice doing coming out of that child.'

Oh yes. Especially as regards to dubbing - I grew up with certain voices and I can be a bit bothered by others. For example: The Simpsons is a big favourite of mine, and I've watched it in French as a child. Canadian French dub, however, rubs me the wrong way even though the voices themselves are close, it's just that it's not the voices I grew up with.

THANK YOU! When I first saw ROTG (like a year after it came out), Chris Pine's voice was so weird to me. His voice is way too old for what was in my head.

Other than that just watching other dubs of anime that are not the voice actors I grew up with. Chris Sabat or nothing!

I think it's distracting when Nicolas Cage does VA. To me, it's always Nicolas Cage. I can't see him as the character, for whatever reason. I did like him in the Croods, though!

It's less the actor for me, and more the voice itself. For example, in the English dub of Spirited Away, I damn near have to lower the volume every time Chihiro talks, but I absolutely love that actress' work as Lilo in Lilo & Stitch.

I love Jason Marsden's VA, but I didn't like him as Haku :X

Sort of? It's less who they cast [I don't know who most actors are, even in live action stuff] than what the voice sounds like. If it really doesn't fit, it can throw me way out.

Ever since I realized adult Simba is voiced by Matthew Broderick, it... well, it didn't ruin the Lion King, but it weirds me out. Mostly because I hated Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

I also hated Ferris Bueller's Day Off! Never been able to figure out why it was a thing.

I loved Hugh Jackman in that film and everyone else (story could have been better), but Pine? The voice just did NOT fit the design to me.

I was going to say no, but then I remembered that my extreme dislike of Will Ferrell likely ruined Megamind for me. I can't tell if I hate the movie because I hate the movie or if I hate the movie because ARHG WILL FERRELL YOU ARE UNFUNNY AND I HATE YOU!!!!! I think I would've liked the movie if he hadn't been the voice actor.

Yeah but the person has to either have a very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very annoying voice, very, or that have to fuck something up while they're doing the voice acting.

It generally doesn't ruin my entire enjoyment of the thing but I won't be able to take that character seriously and will make fun of the character mercilessly.

Oh god yes, especially if the movie is based on a TV series or is a sequel and they don't get the same actor. This also ruins reboots and sometimes just later seasons of TV series for me.

The only real saving grace of the live-action Transformers movies for me is Peter Cullen as Prime.

It didn't completely ruin it for me, but playing one of the more recent Kingdom Hearts games and listening to a completely adult Haley Joel Osment trying to voice Sora was kind of painful, because the first game was over a decade ago and the actor's voice has changed significantly since then and hearing him try to sound like a squeaky pubescent boy again is kind of painful.

Yep.

I love the How To Train Your Dragon movie, but i didn't like Hiccup because of his grating voice that didn't match his face or age. That voice is the opposite of boners.
