This is why I will never get into comic books. Too many story lines/AUs, how the hell is a newcomer supposed to get started?

+1

I refuse to get into any canon that requires me to read wikis just to understand what's going on. I want to be able to pick up something and just start reading, no background research needed.

What about non-superhero comics? They tend to be self contained/have one canon story line.

I do enjoy The Walking Dead. And have loved others like Maus. I enjoy comics just...Marvel/DC is to confusing.

If you like independent comics (I do to. I am sucker for anything by the Los Bros. Hernandez and Faith Erin Hicks) I suggest reading Hawkeye as a start for superhero comics. I know other people here have suggested it but here's another one. It reads less like a superhero comic and more of a independent action comic. The art is like nothing else in Marvel OR DC. Like they have one issue where it's from Hawkeye's dog's perspective with a heavy nod to Saul Bass.
