About once every 5 years, I consider going back to my second fandom (after SF&F) and trying to get back into X-men comics. And there's something wrong with the industry that I can write programs in a half dozen different languages but can't figure out how Marvel retconned the retcon they retconed to fix the wibbly wobbly timey wimey continuity issues around Days of Future Past, about all I can figure out is:

* A different Grey/Summers brat is going to be a messiah.
* Scott is the asshole Mother Mary, possibly John the Baptist as well.
* there are either too many mutants or not enough mutants.
* Wolverine probably has a new woman in the walk-in refrigerator of his background, and possibly a new clone/son/uncle/father/godson/student as well.

The Science Directorate has determined that time travel stories make sensible readers want to kill their own grandfathers to escape the torment of trying to figure out badly written time travel stories.

Five or so years ago, I went from having only seen Batman: The Animated Series to completely immersing myself in the DC Universe. Thanks to the internet, scans_daily, Justice League Unlimited, JLI, and a good comicshop, I got myself pretty brought up to speed and obsessed with many many characters and stories within a matter of months. Just dove right in.

I have never been able to get into X-men.

And I want to. I grew up watching that. Both cartoons. And I know the characters and like (most) of the movies, and Toad is one of my favorite Marvel creations...

But good gravy, no. I just can't even wrap my head around them and what's going on in their lives. I have no idea why it's so much harder with X-men, but...yeah. Just nothing is ever simple with them.

I'm totally fine with X-Men, but I cannot get my head around any part of the DCU other than the Batfamily. And since the reboot, that doesn't make sense either.

Same here. X-Men doesn't tend to baffle me but the nu52? It's taken some effort to suss all that out.

I agree. Getting into X-Men was easy for me.

Different strokes, maybe? (Although yeah, don't even get me started on how the reboot just makes the Batfamily more complicated and less family.)

I started off with the Justice League cartoon, which is pretty good for getting a grounding in the mythos. At the same time, someone made a fandom secret about Justice League International, and I decided to check them out. Scans_Daily had the infamous Oreo (well, Choco) story up, and after reading that and doing a bit of wiki, I went to the shop and bought the first couple of JLI trades and Booster Gold. Then F_S had a Rogues secret, and that got me into Flash...

I dunno, it was very piecemeal and I sort of worked backwards--the first Flash Rogues story I read was the last proper one to be written and all.

Meanwhile, every time I try to jump onto X-men, something like Xorn is happening.

Oh, Xorn! No wonder you fled! I was actually a big DC fan in the late 80s and early 90s, and loved the JLA/JLE/JLI stuff. My favourite comic ever is Suicide Squad, and I had to know lots of backstory for that, but then it kept on changing and they kept sidelining or killing characters I liked, so I left. I come back every now and then (Gotham Central, Birds of Prey, Secret Six, Batwoman) but the main continuity confuses the hell out of me and I don't have the spare brainpower to put into it...not when I'm already keeping up with Marvel! Then again, I hate all the cosmic stuff in Marvel, so if that's on the up, maybe I'll be back over to the DC side soon.
