It's pretty huge among the Dean!girl faction on Tumblr which makes me quite a sad Dean!girl. Dean's relationship with John was always the most fascinating one for me to explore and yet none of these fans seem to give John the slightest bit of slack at all. At best, it's "he did the best he could and his best FUCKING SUCKED" and at worst - damn. It's pretty serious character bashing, that's for sure. Plus they put anything they don't like about Dean's insecurities entirely on John's shoulders and, yeah, John fucked Dean up but good but not all of Dean's issues directed entirely from John.

Unfortunately, the Tumblr faction of Dean!girls are also the only faction of Dean!girls I know of who are still active. My desperate need for fresh Dean content keeps me tuned in, despite how sad the John bashing makes me.

SA

Case in point... I just came across a post with a gif from Lazarus Rising, where Dean has just pulled himself out of his own grave. It's a badass, amazing moment and one of my favorites in the series. It also has nothing at all to do with John, yet these are the tags someone decided to add to it:

"#OH GOD NO #because John wouldn’t teach it the way Dean would teach it to Sam #he wouldn’t be persistent but gentle #he wouldn’t listen when Dean said he wasn’t ready yet #he wouldn’t give him a break when Dean started to have panic attacks #he’d tell him what to do and then throw him right in #he’d listen to Dean screaming and just say #’gotta learn to get yourself outta there dean’ #’I won’t always be there to do it for you’ #and if he thought Dean was actually suffocating #he’d pull him out #shake him off a little too hard #stare at the tears streaming down him cheeks and shake his head #’we’ll continue tomorrow’#walk away with disappointment in his eyes #and ignore the nightmares Dean started having every night after that #of himself at the bottom of a grave #with his father throwing dirt on him #smiling #happy to be rid of such a disappointment#can you tell I hate John Winchester? (x)"

I mean, John fucked up as a dad. He fucked up all the time. And yet who really thinks it's IC for John to force kid!Dean to be buried alive repeatedly despite panic attacks and nightmares? To leave him there until he started suffocating and then just look disappointed and walk away? John could be a spectacularly awful parent, but he wasn't that bad.

That's honestly just bizarre. Like, it's one thing to hate John but why drag him into something completely unrelated like that, and why imagine abuses from him? I also think they're really reaching for more woobie-fication of Dean. I'm a diehard Dean!girl too, and will be fascinated by his issues until the end, but that's just so stupid and unnecessary.

Lol. Maybe I haven't rewatched John's eps in a while, but I kind of think that within the universe of the show John wasn't that bad. I mean, sure, in a normal world, he fucked up his sons majorly. But in a world where evil supernatural entities actually exist, raising Sam and Dean like he did was equipping them for the world they were growing up in. On a relative scale I don't think you can call John more abusive than any other military-style strict and emotionally undemonstrative father in the real world who otherwise loves and cares about his children.
