(Anonymous) 2013-08-07 02:36 am (UTC)(link)I think this encapsulates really well one of my biggest problems with tumblr (other than the absolute lack of control over something as simple as your own posts, given the absence of anything even resembling security functions similar to flocking or freezing comments, etc.). Tumblr feels limited to two ends of a spectrum with little to no middle ground: it's either a race to gather as many followers as possible and be the one who is being listened to/is tumblr famous, or just...utterly superficial on the level of idly flipping through tabloids at the grocery checkout.
It's frustrating. I miss coherent conversations. I miss being able to keep up with those conversations with a simple page refresh rather than having to open a zillion tabs to figure out all the different directions things have gone. I miss being able to be a participant at a moderate level rather than having to achieve some astronomical level of tumblr cred or else be nothing other than another of the masses clicking the like button. I miss words because yes, I personally get more from discussion than from pretty pictures. I miss the social value of people at least having the ability to define spaces for general conversation, and complaining conversation, and insulting conversation, and attention-seeking conversation, and intensely private conversation, without being forced to either have everything out there for all the world to see or stay restricted to one-on-one messaging.
tumblr is, basically, really problematic for a lot of people who don't thrive on either anonymity OR heights of "fame." A lot of us miss the middle of the spectrum, because tumblr just doesn't serve it very well.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-07 02:44 am (UTC)(link)Basically Tumblr caters to people who are great at fanart or else want validation for basically doing nothing at all except clicking a Like button. Fuck that. The vast majority of people/fans are neither of those things.
So how do we create a platform that satisfies everybody? It's the next big thing.
