I'm not one of the people who writes fic and doesn't read it, rather the opposite--I've never published any of the stuff I do write online; I write for myself and anyway most of my output kind of sucks. But I try not to judge fic writers who say they don't read much fic by other people. I've never seen any of them claim they didn't read, period, which would make me cringe, mainly because I think writers kinda have to read for inspiration and on a more prosaic level to learn how stories work and how to put them together properly.

I know of at least one fic writer who's had to modify her fic-reading-and-writing habits considerably. She's still writing her fandom's most popular, and longest, AU fic. But from what I gather she used to write tons more a lot quicker, and read tons of fic and books. Now she's got some kind of cognitive/memory impairment and also some nasty chronic pain issues that mean her concentration is shot; she writes the fic in relatively short chunks, has it beta'd, and publishes it, then goes on to the next part. She even has trouble re-reading her own fic to check for errors; apparently she listens to audio books because she can't actually read much anymore.

Another author in the same fandom doesn't read much fic, although she does read published books. Her stuff seems well received, I like a lot of it, and she's the sort of insanely prolific writer that I normally associate with half-assed crap, but her stuff's really good. And I can see why she wouldn't read much fic, simply because I can't imagine writing that much of anything and still having time to do things like eat, sleep, and go to the bathroom. Maybe she writes on the toilet. If it wasn't for the occasional rant about her job, I'd think she didn't work; for awhile there, she wrote so much per day I would look at my monthly wordcount and want to cry.

This is such a kind post. You're right, people can have perfectly good reasons for not reading works by other writers.

P.S. Whether or not you publish your fic, I hope you find joy in it and that you don't give yourself too hard a time over your wordcount *hugs*
