I do like Snape better than James, but, to be honest, the latter had only been a school bully, while the former joined a homicidal group of loonies who wanted to take over the wizarding world; these aren't comparable. I know that bullying is considered one of the deadly sins now, but in fact, being awful, it is a pretty common phenomenon that does not require the bullying kids to be deviant in any way (apart from being poorly brought up). Joining terrorist organizations, on the other hand? Not good for a grown-up.

Joining terrorist organizations! Being a horrible and full-throated bigot! Then being a horribly abusive teacher who played favorites in the most blatant and harmful way possible and was a horrible ass to everyone for no good reason except he could!

But none of that even approaches how bad it is to have occasionally been a dickhead when you were 16, because that is just fucking unforgivable.

to be fair though, didn't he join a terrorist organization BEFORE he was a grown-up? If being a teenager is still a 'kid', then he joind the Death Eaters as a kid same as the Mauraders bullied as kids. And then he got out as soon as he WAS an adult and realized what deep shit he was in.

There's a difference to not realizing you're being a dickhead at 16 and somehow not realizing that joining a genocidal terrorist group is a bad idea at 16.

One of those things is forgivable, the other is not.

This wasn't an evil book-club. It was an ideological cult of personality, and cults use specific psychological techniques to target and apply pressure to vulnerable people in their recruitment efforts. A 16-year-old kid with the vulnerabilities that make him an attractive target for cult recruiters is going to be hard-pressed to recognize those techniques for what they are and resist them, especially in the canonically sheltered environment of wizarding society.

I agree, actually. I had momentarily forgot that Severus wasn't a grown-up when he joined the DE. All the same, he was still with them when he came to Dumbledore for help, and the main reason he left the group seems to be his love for/obsession with Lily.

Different anon, but the Death Eaters weren't being subtle about what they were doing. It was straight up known they were terrorists who would kill and torture their victims. Snape knew that well enough by his fifth year and still wanted to join up. So he wasn't misguided into thinking it was something less horrific.
