Nice of you to warn for spoilers, but really? It doesn't really spoil anything except for the fact that Harry has a son with the name Severus. Plus, I can't imagine anyone in fandom not knowing that fact.

Spoilers? For Harry Potter? Are there even spoilers for Harry Potter anymore? I mean, I suppose new stuff on Pottermore could qualify, but even then...

Anyway. I don't know how much of an asshole people think James was, but if you think he was worse than Snape, who bullied kids who literally never did anything to him (like Neville and Hermione) and was an actual facts Death Eater until the women he was obsessed with was threatened, then I dunno man.

I do like Snape better than James, but, to be honest, the latter had only been a school bully, while the former joined a homicidal group of loonies who wanted to take over the wizarding world; these aren't comparable. I know that bullying is considered one of the deadly sins now, but in fact, being awful, it is a pretty common phenomenon that does not require the bullying kids to be deviant in any way (apart from being poorly brought up). Joining terrorist organizations, on the other hand? Not good for a grown-up.

James grew out of it while still in school. Snape was still bullying children from a position of power well into his thirties/forties. Good deeds in one areas of life do not give you a free pass to be vile and abusive in others.

I like to think that Harry naming his son after Snape as opposed to James meant that he knew that Snape was a better man than his father.

Yeah...I don't think Snape was better than James.

James was a bully, but he also fought against Voldemort and cared for some people who would have been bullied otherwise. If they'd known about Lupin, most people would have been terrified of him. Peter probably wasn't well liked just because people are cruel.

Snape? Snape harassed an eleven year old boy because that boy's parents could have died instead of Lily. He only really went against Voldemort because he targeted Lily. Snape was obsessed and he was cruel. Just because someone does good things for love doesn't mean he's a good person.

Yeahhhhh, Rowling really fucked up on the whole Snape thing. I mean, she reveals at the tail end of the last book that Snape was really a reformed death eater and that his good deeds were motivated by his obsessive love for his childhood friend that he drove away with racial slurs and we're expected to buy that this makes him one of the bravest people ever and makes up for his horrendous treatment of....everyone? Rowling, you didn't even try. If that's something she was planning from the beginning, it sure seemed like she pulled it out of her ass. Terrible.

James had all the asshole traits that Snape did, minus the racism... when he was fifteen. Then James grew out of it and raised a family while Snape continued to bully those weaker than him for decades.

Riiight. The teenage bully who grew up into a useless father that got killed off for his own stupidity is so much better than the guy who made a mistake and spent his whole life repenting for it, contributing to saving the Wizarding Britain in the process.

James was a rich obnoxious privileged kid - and he was the first to pick on Snape and there were always four of them to one of him, so no, they were never equal jerks. He called Lily a mudblood after intense humiliation to which she contributed by smiling at him hanging upside down. She just used it as an excuse to ditch him because he was ugly and unpopular and that was what drove him to Voldemort's inner circle.

And about him being a bad teacher - Wonder why Dumbledore allowed him to teach at Hogwarts, then? His class was advanced. And Neville turned out all right, didn't he? And it wasn't like he could get very chummy with the Gryffindors in a room full of Slytherins when he was a double agent. Not to mention he was the one to teach Harry all he needed to know - and although Harry was unfair to him for seven books, he finally acknowledged him as the hero he was at the end.

Repeat after me, Snape was the bravest man Harry ever knew. Since your reading comprehension fails, just watch the DH movie part 2 and tell me how this is a bad guy.
