Yes, I remembered right after I posted this that Harry's other son was named James. Just getting that out there. James is still an asshole.

I'm not a fan of James Potter, but neither am I a fan of grown men who bully eleven year olds into terrified puddles.

Teens bullying teens suck. Adults bullying children are fucking disgraceful.

This. Seriously. Plus, James was a jerk but he didn't call his friends bigoted names and join up with the Death Eaters.

I'd cut him some slack on the basis of "allowed to reform after royally fucking up, given how fucked up his childhood was (obdisc: abuse is not an excuse for being an abuser, but people in pain often suck a lot).....except that he goes on to torment and terrorize children under his authority.

Which makes him a fucking disgraceful human being.

He was an overly-strict teacher who played favorites a lot. You make him sound like Hitler in the classroom or something, jfc.

James was indeed an asshole. Then he died. Severus was also an asshole. He continued to be an asshole for nearly two decades. Then he died.

And then they were both dead and no longer running around being assholes, so someone who benefited from things each of them did was free to ignore the whole asshole thing and name kids after them.

Also after Sirius, who I think was more of an asshole than either of them, although unlike Severus he did manage not to join any hate groups or abuse his position of power to torment preadolescent children.

How is Sirius a bigger asshole than either of them?

Bigger asshole than James because he did all the same things and never seemed to realize that maybe they weren't such a good idea. Bigger -- at least showier -- asshole than Severus when they were teenagers. Not when they were adults. I was being excessively diplomatic.

Well, there's the whole "setting up his best friend to commit manslaughter and thereby expose a medical condition for which he will be turned into a social pariah" thing...

Yeah, including Snape was excessive diplomacy. But more of an asshole than James, yeah -- as another anon pointed out, the werewolf prank was, besides potentially fatal for Snape, the height of assholery to Remus, who was supposedly Sirius's friend.

yeah i saw an anon above said remus was his "best friend" which is not true. remus was "a friend" and probably ranked on sirius's radar about as high as peter so probably not very high at all, just not easily overlooked like peter.

/eyerolls at this stuff the sirius/remus fans always forget

sirius and james were besties. i bet sirius cared about two things: getting laid and james. maybe lily by extension. nobody else really. if he was really remus's friend even when james died, he wouldn't have thought remus was a liar and a traitor.

This is a very old fight, and nobody's opinions are going to be changed. But I'm just going to get this out there so that we've done all the moves.

James: Was a spoiled asshole as a teenager. Hearsay suggests he got over it. We never see much either way. Dead younger than Keats.

Snape: Was a bitter asshole as a teenager. Joined genocidal regime. Lived to spend years as a grown adult bullying the orphans and damaged children of those whom he and his pals had tortured and murdered. Hearsay suggests he wanted to save some people during the second war against Voldemort or something, but we never get to see it.

Etc.

I think that "risked his life to act as a spy against the genocidal regime that would have tortured him to death if they'd discovered he'd betrayed them" is a bit more than, "Hearsay suggests he wanted to save some people or something." I'm not saying he wasn't an asshole, but be fair.

Well, maybe I am too harsh but the hearsay nature of Snape's "only those I couldn't save" bollocks riles me. Who DID he save or help? He still let poor Charity Burbage get murdered. Hogwarts still became a hell hole of torture. He still let Harry walk to his death on DD's orders. Who was helped? Who were the people he COULD save, or even tried to?
