Yeahhhhh, Rowling really fucked up on the whole Snape thing. I mean, she reveals at the tail end of the last book that Snape was really a reformed death eater and that his good deeds were motivated by his obsessive love for his childhood friend that he drove away with racial slurs and we're expected to buy that this makes him one of the bravest people ever and makes up for his horrendous treatment of....everyone? Rowling, you didn't even try. If that's something she was planning from the beginning, it sure seemed like she pulled it out of her ass. Terrible.

+1000

(Anonymous) 2013-08-10 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
didn't they say once that Snape was initially just based on her old Chemistry teacher, who was an irredeemable asshole, but then Alan Rickman played him in the movie and she was suddenly like "...hmmm."

ayrt

if she really did that then that's hilarious. and horrible

[personal profile] seventh_seal 2013-08-10 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
no, it's one of the stupidest comments I've read

[personal profile] seventh_seal 2013-08-10 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
don't conflate JKR with crazy Rickmansnapefen, she had his story arc planned from the beginning, that's obvious

(Anonymous) 2013-08-10 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
That would explain so much

(Anonymous) 2013-08-10 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
I really wish she had tried to redeem him in some other way than revealing that he and lily had a connection. In some ways it just made him into even more of a douchebag. Rowling, why

[personal profile] seventh_seal 2013-08-10 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
because she had it planned from the beginning, Snape just got a bit out of her hands in the process (at one point, he seemed way cooler than he turned out to be) and that understandably confused some people

(Anonymous) 2013-08-10 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
I know she planned it from the beginning but that just makes the execution seem even more sloppy

[personal profile] seventh_seal 2013-08-10 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, the entirety of book 7 still seems a bit off to me and I've had six years to cope with that.

But one thing that fans of Snape seem to ignore is that he is a supporting character in the whole story, not the lead, and JKR didn't owe him that great and multifaceted a resolution and what he got was still more detailed and even satisfying than most other adults in this kids' books got.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-10 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't necessarily want a more detailed resolution for Snape, I just hate that it turned out that he was secretly in love with Harry's mom the whole time and that this was his motivation for changing sides. It just didn't work for me

[personal profile] seventh_seal 2013-08-10 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah, I get that now, I misinterpreted your previous comment. Well, I dunno - what would the alternative be? Snape realizing he made a mistake just by virtue of moral reasoning? But then it wouldn't make sense why he is still such a bitter, vindictive man that takes out his disappointment in life on kids. I thought Lily worked pretty well, his thoroughly selfish reason was ingeniously put to full use for the Greater Good.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-10 06:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure it would. He could be bitter about how heroic the parents of those kids were while he was just a selfish git and got on the boat late, and being a mean-spirited twit, took it out on them because he couldn't touch the parents.

+1

I love the Harry Potter series and I even like Snape's character but I thought the way she wrote snape's backstory was cringeworthy and the fact that she had harry name his kid after him was even moreso. It was just...bad.

The foreshadowing is there all along. That's why so many people... figured out most of his backstory before the book came out.

And she said he was brave, which you really... can't deny. It did take a lot of courage to play double agent.

Rowling never meant for it to 'make up' for all the shit he pulled. She doesn't consider Snape a hero and has outright said as much.
