When I got my first teaching job, I pulled everything offline even though there wasn't anything rated higher than T. Working with adults, I care less, but would still delete everything if my fandom and rl accounts were connected.

Facebook/gmail wants everyone to have a single, cohesive online identity, so you do have reason to be paranoid.

THIS. Let's be real. It's not hot. It's not sex. Who cares if you'll be that teacher's favorite student. I think it's a legit concern. People have lost their job over LESS and when you're a teacher, finding a job is hard enough as it is. There are whole areas (THE BIBLE BELT) that can make finding a job hell if you get found out for something like that. Something we know is trite and stupid like fanfic.

I feel the OP is 100% justified and you are too, Blue. I would mind less with teaching at the college level (my intent) but I wouldn't want ANY students to find ANY of my fanfic.

The thing is that the name I use IRL is the name I use online. I'm going to have to change that. It's uhm, pretty unique. Considering a legal name change to have a professional name that's completely different and unrelated to the name I've gone by on AND offline for years.

And you can laugh all you want about it (you = general) but Reddit's Teachers subreddit has had some pretty bad stories about similar things. Or like, people seen in public drinking wine at a wedding and they get fired for that. I'm pretty sure writing porn of any kind, or even M-rated stuff with sex in it, even if it's not porny, is enough to get you fired most places as well--regardless of sexual orientation.

/also kind of paranoid

(The funny thing is I have some friends who would laugh about my paranoia but seriously if you google my name (first/last) even my Livejournal comes up. I feel that's a reason to be iffy about continuing to go by that name.)

It might be good to start building a "worksafe" persona now. A friend of mine cleaned up her online stuff after getting hired at a private school, and it is only now, a year later, that most of the penises are gone. (fanartist)
