Unless you put easter eggs in your story (like, any time I need a coffee shop, I namecheck a local place downtown instead of Starbucks or something), it's highly unlikely anyone you who didn't already know about your fannish life know will recognize. And even then, they still probably won't.

Unless your name is Teacherof_[your subject}_at_[your school] or something.

When I got my first teaching job, I pulled everything offline even though there wasn't anything rated higher than T. Working with adults, I care less, but would still delete everything if my fandom and rl accounts were connected.

Facebook/gmail wants everyone to have a single, cohesive online identity, so you do have reason to be paranoid.

Actually, this is a very, very real concern. I know of a teacher who wrote gay porn under an alias, and somehow, her teenage students found out.

She lost her teaching job, and has black mark on her teaching career, and probably will not be working in that profession again.

I personally edit professional gay porn for a college professor. She's the one who told me the story above. She's terrified she'll be outed, but she loves writing and being published.

Are you worried about the homophobia? Are you closeted, are you queer openly? I think we're meant to assume you're straight female by default and the gayness would be seen as perverted as the porn, else why mention it. Your heterosexuality would be compromised.

On the one hand, this is really only a problem if your students' parents find out. If your students (or co-workers) find your fanfic, that means they were probably looking for gay porn fanfic online, and it becomes a shared embarrassment. (I had a long and rather involved discussion about fanfic, including slashfic, with a teacher in another department, and at one point found a handwritten Primeval fanfic in the women's restroom in the teacher's lounge. There are a lot of us in the profession.)

On the other hand, this is one reason I tend to stick to older fandoms, especially for my raunchier stuff, myself. The kids are much less likely to be looking there.

Me too. (Under a different handle not related to my primary online identity, but still.) I think it would be pretty hard to trace my IRL identity to the identity I've written porn under, at least.

What's really funny is that a lot of my kids are fannish types who openly discuss their fic with me and what they're reading on ff.net and who they ship. They're in very different fandoms than I've been in, at least. And the conversation—at least in school—is always PG-rated (Draco and Harry just hold hands, right?).

I teach in a school where there's always been a lot of homophobia, and I have noticed that the popularity of yaoi among the kids has actually reduced a lot of homophobic language and led to the kids openly discussing queer issues in a more positive way. So that's completely rad.
