Are you worried about the homophobia? Are you closeted, are you queer openly? I think we're meant to assume you're straight female by default and the gayness would be seen as perverted as the porn, else why mention it. Your heterosexuality would be compromised.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-10 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
no, OP has a valid concern because in the VAST majority of places, gay porn would be seen as a far more "offensive" thing to be writing than het porn. Sad but true.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-10 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
But is the OP openly gay already? For instance, there's a reality tv star in my country who is both gay and a teacher. You know, openly gay teachers happen. I think people reading this aren't even thinking of that.

SA Would the students be surprised by gay porn if they knew teacher was gay already? Or is teacher closeted? "Who I am" very different secret in this case.

Or is this another we are all meant to assume gay porn fanficcers are straight females? I think we are and the meaning of the secret changes.

The secret reads like it isn't necessarily about job-loss, but potentially outing and embarrassment.

SA Damn, I meant SA as in I'm the person starting subthread.

new anon here. I'm pretty sure that a teacher of any gender or orientation creating any sort of porn and posting it online is going to feel paranoid. I think the consequences of a teacher watching/ reading porn would be one thing (though a teacher at my old school was recently fired for just that), but finding that they were involved in making it would seem pretty inappropriate. What's normal in fan culture could seem disturbing to parents in that context

I guess what I'm trying to say is that I imagine this has less to do with her being seen as a straight woman, and maybe more to do with her having a position of responsibility with children

OP: Bingo. Cheers for summing it up.

I was actually at lunch with colleagues and one of them mentioned that when she was getting her B.Ed. a classmate of hers told everyone (over drinks, I assume? or more socially than in class?) that she wrote erotica and if they wanted to read it, feel free! You'd think the answer might be along the lines of "Um, no, that's ok, I'm not really into erotica." but the rant was more like "How sick are people?!" So... some things we do not discuss at work. O_O;;

(Anonymous) 2013-08-10 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
So what, they were specific about the kind of porn they write.
Any kind of porn can get you fired as a teacher. Hell, having pics of yourself drinking (legally, not at work, not wildly) on your facebook can get you fired as a teacher.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-10 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
God, it depends on the school and the country, doesn't it? Or are you just US-centric? Is it so weird on f!s to speculate about the OP, their social context, and their wording about outing?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-11 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
OP: To be truthful, I threw in the gay porn bit a) because it's true, and b) because, from a marketing standpoint, it makes a more salacious f!s. ;-)

I am in Canada, and our education laws are provincially mandated, and thankfully my province protects teachers AND students from being discriminated against based on the litany of things listed in the Charter of Rights, so I count myself pretty lucky that I have legal recourse were anything to bite me on the discrimination side.

And all in all my students and their parents don't seem frazzled in any way that I talk about 'my wife'. I constantly monitor my language in class to make sure that every student who might be outside of the 'norm', and also those who are unwaveringly stuck in it, get a different perspective than they might hear from their other teachers.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-11 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
OP: Actually queer married cis-female, and out, even to my kids (though a few discussions have gone: "My wife and I..." "You mean your husband!" "No, my... *headdesk*" Even het porn would be frowned upon, I would think. WON'T SOMEBODY THINK OF THE CHILDREN?!? GOR FORBID THEY SHOULD GROW UP TO BE INDIVIDUALS WITH A FULLY FORMED SENSE OF THEIR OWN SEXUAL AND/OR GENDER IDENTITY!
