I think "non-cis" for a lot of folk means characters who don't follow narrow cultural prescriptions for their perceived gender, and THAT is fucked up and actually not progressive at all. Sorry, you are not automatically non-cis if you're femme in a perceived-assigned-male-at-birth body, that just crams us further into binary views of gender that queers used to have to deal with in the bad old days - lesbian? You're an inverted women (male inside), of course! How radical!

And hello, some of these non-trans fans of non-cis theorising seem to miss that you can be, for instance, a femme trans man, as well as a femme cis man.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-10 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
... has my reading comprehension completely failed me or did you just call femme trans women cis??

(Anonymous) 2013-08-10 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
da

Your reading comprehension failed. Pretty sure they meant that guys that take interest in traditionally "feminine" things aren't necessarily non-cis, and I've actually seen it around a lot that clearly if you're nonconforming in your interests then that means you're gender-nonconforming too, which is irritating.

For instance, I'm a girl that LOVES traditionally masculine things--I love playing football and rugby, I love video games, I love wood and metal shop, tons of stuff like that. But I am 100% completely female and I'm perfectly comfortable in that. I've literally had people tell me that I must be confused.

It's kind of a form of doublethink. Claiming at the same time that you want to break down gender roles, yet insisting that those that don't conform to them must be genderfluid/trans/etc...

(Anonymous) 2013-08-10 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
Urgh, yeah, I get it now. I see people just using "assigned [x] at birth" when they're talking about trans people so often that I totally jumped to conclusions. Plus I just woke up and I don't think that was doing me any favors. Whoops! Now I feel pretty stupid.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-10 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
That's okay! Don't feel stupid. I think this is one of those topics that has nerves frayed on all sides of the issue, so it's easy to be on a bit of a hair trigger about it.

DA

Thank you for being such a good sport. :)

(Anonymous) 2013-08-10 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
I'm a cis woman and I can be incredibly femme sometimes and yet when people find out I'm into taking machines apart and learning how they work they insist that I MUST HAVE some 'problem' and should talk about it 'to a therapist just to be sure'.
One of my former friends even told me I should 'examine myself' because he didn't want to 'invest in a girl who secretly is a guy'.

Hate.
So much haaaaate.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-10 06:45 am (UTC)(link)
Trans* people often feel rpessured to act as close to the stereotype of their gender as possible, or else nobody will believe that they're really trans*. They also have people tellign them they're just confused, probably many more than those who do it to you.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-10 08:38 am (UTC)(link)
Oh no, I don't doubt that, don't get me wrong. I'm not trying to make it seem like I'm the more put-upon party or anything. All I mean to say is that one's interests don't necessarily have anything to do with their gender, and misgendering anyone based on what they like or like to do is a shitty thing to do.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-10 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
na

They're saying you can be cis and have a femme identity (or, for a woman, have masculine identity). Femme/masculine identities mean something more along the lines of..."ish", not full on female or male.

It tends to describe a kind of gender-leaning regardless of whether one is a trans* or cis person.

Might have that wrong, but that's how I see it used...

(Anonymous) 2013-08-10 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
I was saying feminine and masculine have nothing much to do with gender identity at all, merely an occasional correlation. unfortunately a lot of fandom folk insist X ~must be a woman trapped in a man's body if they're a bit feminine, for instance. (Or insist they ~must be gay, we get secrets like that too.)

It's awesome there's more awareness and visibility and acceptance of non-cis and non-straight people in the fan community, but sometimes it is just tired old stereotypes that lead to insistence it's evidence that Character X is non-cis/non-straight, whereas, YA CAN'T ALWAYS PICK US.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-10 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT nope! sorry if I was unclear.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-10 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
No, you really weren't, I'm just used to people using "assigned [x] at birth" when they mean trans (which bothers me a lot, tbh) and I just woke up, so... yeah. Whoops!

For what it's worth I actually totally agree with you. It's great that fandom has more awareness now and all but sometimes they just go so far out of their way to try to show it that they end up looking ridiculous, showing their own ignorance, or both.

And it's really terrible that media stays so far away from anything other than cis binary etc that it has to end up that way, too.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-10 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
No worries, totally agree with you! I can be bad at wording things specially as I just woke up.

My partner just gave birth and our baby was given M on the birth certificate, nothing was said at birth, just automatic, there's the penis, and it is coercive and totally smoothly done. Whether my baby will grow up to be a cis male (probably) or not doesn't negate the fact that my child was coercively assigned male at birth. Just as I was coercively assigned at my birth.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-10 06:52 am (UTC)(link)
I get what your saying, but this could only be avoided if doctors put "neutral until the child decides what it wants to be" on the birth certificate and everyone only talks to and about your child using gender neutral pronouns until then. And...
that's actually a neat gender-concept for a sci-fi novel. Hmm.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-10 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
this x 100

Worst example I ever saw: my friend wrote an amazing drag queen fic about a canonically gay character, and got an incensed comment from someone claiming the fic was OOC because the character is gay in canon, not trans.

It was. Like. They did not know that actual gay culture with drag in it was a thing.
