So there was some discussion about this on tumblr, but does anyone have thoughts about Scout Leader Earl Harlan and Cecil? The "We could've had something Cecil. Always remember that" got to me in a weird way.

Ohhh! I forgot about him. I wonder if Earl is someone who wanted to date him! What episode was that in? I seem to recall Earl saying that sort of softly and earnestly. Which sounds like something someone with a romantic interest would say. Hopefully we will learn more.

I always headcanon'd that Steve is an ex of Cecil as well.

The Eternal Scouts episode. I figured it as kind of like, Earl always wanted to go out with him but never got up the nerve, and when the Eternal Scouts ceremony was going to happen he knew he was probably going to die/be taken, so he wanted it to be the last thing he said.

Heh, I don't even KNOW what's going on with Steve and Cecil. Like, Cecil seems to hate him as much as he hates Desert Bluffs, which does seem pretty personal.

I think that same thing about the Scout Master. I felt that the way Cecil seemed to have no reaction to it that Earl Harlan held an unrequited crush on Cecil, who remained oblivious.

There's something there but I'm gonna wait for the reveal because... shit, it's Night Vale. It could be anything from wacky supernatural shenanigans to Steve bought the last tub of ice cream from the store before Cecil got there.

As for Steve as an ex of Cecil's: It's a bit too cliche for me...

I came away with the impression that Cecil and Earl had dated briefly, Cecil broke it off non-acrimoniously, and Earl still isn't over him.

I...really can't see Steve as an ex. It's more of a sitcom nemesis hate that Cecil has for him. Like, they probably live in the same neighborhood (or building, if Cecil is an apartment dweller) and Steve always leaves his music on too loud and criticizes the state of Cecil's front lawn and is probably the one stealing his newspaper (when there is a newspaper to steal), and he has one of those little yappy dogs that he doesn't train not to bark at/pee on everything.
