Even if I was likely to tell you there's something wrong with that...I couldn't really blame you for not caring about Mako/Raleigh for example because that dynamic didn't really deliver like the internet led me to believe it would (mostly because Charlie Hunnam forgot to eat his acting Wheaties when he was making this movie, what the hell even happened there, man). I wasn't paying close enough attention to realize that Chuck and Herc were father and son early on in the movie and I was shipping them harder than anyone else so you can go ahead and laugh at that, bahaha.

tbh i think what you mean is, they weren't acting enough like father and son.

I wonder if it's not because he's trying to sound tough and American? I dunno, I remember liking him in Cold Mountain where he put a lot of personality into just a few lines and scenes, and here, well... That said, I also wonder if it wasn't part of the feel Del Toro was going for, because every time he spoke, it made me think of the standard narration in a dramatic video game. Not necessarily bad, just "I Am The Tough But Sad Hero Character."

Though personally, I'm glad to see less Mako/Raleigh. I'm usually glad to see the lady protagonist not need romance in a movie.

It does seem to be the character, I guess, since supposedly there were certain cliches that were intentionally put in. I found Idris Elba's presence to be relatively bland too, but hardly bad.

I'm glad to see less Mako/Raleigh. I'm usually glad to see the lady protagonist not need romance in a movie. I could agree, but I thought the relationship was presented as pretty romantic, regardless of whether they kissed, and I've heard they initially did and it got cut out (at least I think I saw something about that on Tumblr?) And anyway I can't just praise a lack of romance when whatever exists in its place isn't as interesting a relationship as it could be, though like I said I think it just suffered from the characters not being acted strongly enough.

I saw a certain sexual interest from Mako in Raleigh ... before they first drifted, and then it just seemed to fizzle out, which makes sense to me. Getting that closely into someone's brain and seeing respectively their brother's horrendous death and their childhood trauma might make you stick together, but I can't imagine it helps the romance.

I honestly rather liked their dynamic.

That said, the acting (face- and body-language wise) doesn't do much for me because I'm an aspie, so that might be why I wasn't bugged.
