I've been there, too. But I less blame fangirls than media not having a lot of interracial BFFs. That said, I'm glad to have found some fandoms with easily shipped PoCs (Perception, Sinbad, Welcome to Night Vale).

But neither of them is conventionally attractive? The 'pretty white boys' ship of this fandom is Chuck/Raleigh, which is really the most cliché slash ship anyone could come up with after seeing that movie. Nothing against the ship itself, I definitely see the appeal and I've read some good fic for it, but in a movie full of pretty original character dynamics, 'two white good-looking hot-blooded men who hate each other at first but learn to respect each other' is the most standard ship trope. I really wouldn't feel to bad about your ship, if I were you.

I totally ship them but I wouldn't say they were the 'attractive white boy' ship, that belongs to Chuck/Raleigh tbh. I do sort of get what you mean though, like I always feel a bit bad whenever I happen to ship a big bandwagon pairing that's come from a movie or TV show because of the whole 'lol shallow fangirls' thing.

I love this ship because it features some of my favorite relationship dynamics, but, at the same time, I hate being one of those people who fans over and contributes to the most current and popular "attractive white guys" ship.

Anyone else attracted to Newt and Herman not because they are "attractive white guys" but because you dig their personalities?

I'm kind of tired of saying, "yeah, I liked such and such character," and being dismissed with, "You would like those character because they are attractive and white?"

No, I like those characters because they are interesting. Or in the case of Newt, funny as well like a hamster running around yelling, "SCIENCE, BIATCHES!"

Even if I was likely to tell you there's something wrong with that...I couldn't really blame you for not caring about Mako/Raleigh for example because that dynamic didn't really deliver like the internet led me to believe it would (mostly because Charlie Hunnam forgot to eat his acting Wheaties when he was making this movie, what the hell even happened there, man). I wasn't paying close enough attention to realize that Chuck and Herc were father and son early on in the movie and I was shipping them harder than anyone else so you can go ahead and laugh at that, bahaha.

Like some people have already mentioned, they're not viewed as particularly attractive.
My only reason of shipping them is because one of them is from Garmisch and the other one from Berlin and I find that hilarious because my mum is from Garmisch and my dad came from a Berlin suburb. He he.

I missed the part where shipping was a zero sum game.

They're perfect, they pretty much ship themselves right there on the screen. It's not like either of them has another character that makes more sense to ship them with who isn't white.

Anyway I ended up shipping an incest ship in this movie which was surprising..

Four thoughts I had in quick succession upon reading this secret:

1) Newt and Hermann are attractive?

2) The heart ships what the heart wills, anon.

3) Nevertheless, when so few people's hearts will them to ship Stacker Pentecost with anybody, then I do think there's something hinky racist about it. (Herc/Stacker? Tendo/Stacker? In a more just world, there would be tons of fic for both those ships.)

4) Otoh, identifying racism within a group is very different from identifying racism in an individual. Yeah, if all of your ships are white dudely ships, then maybe you should sit yourself down for a bit of introspection. But if you ship some PoC ships and some femslash and/or het, in addition to your Pacific Rim m/m OTP, then you've got nothing to worry about.

See, I think this is the point where the tumblr-SJ stuff backfires. Like in the SnK secret(#3) - "A character can't be cis if he doesn't show every stereotype connected to their gender" - SJ done wrong or OTT actually does the opposite of what SJ is supposed to do.
And in the case of "ship only the white dudes", it's a bit similar. Slashers, especially when female, can't win: If they ship the hot white dudes, they're racist. If they ship POC or interracial ships, they're fetishizing. If they ship male gay ships, they're fetishizing as well. What happened to "women should be allowed to read/watch/etc. whatever erotica they want without getting shamed for it"?

So really, fuck the people who try to shame and guilt trip you for shipping what you want to ship.
