Titanic AUs?!

Going through the crossovers/fandom fusions on AO3, and I just found two Titanic AUs in short order. I've run into two more on earlier occasions. I do not get it. I really, really don't get it.

Mind you, I might be being unfair to the second, third, and fourth instances. It's not their fault the first one -- the only one I attempted to read -- was a horrible conglomeration of a bodice-ripper romance novel and a horribly cliched any-two-guys slash fic, dressed in a shoddy Titanic costume, wearing a nametag of the other fandom it supposedly featured. God was it bad.

Eh. I'm surprised there's not more, tbh. Tragedy and a famous movie centered around that tragedy? Sounds like prime crossover/AU territory for people looking to write sappy romance fic to me.

Are we talking crossovers with the movie Titanic or "Character from [show] are passengers on the Titanic" AUs?

I once read an X-Files fic where Mulder and Scully travel back in time (somehow) to the Titanic and meet Jack and Rose and it was FUCKING HYSTERICAL despite obviously being meant to be serious.

Scenarios where Character A is upper-class (and usually being railroaded into a relationship with someone unpleasant) and Character B is lower-class and a free spirit and it's LOVE! One particularly awful setup had this AND Jack and Rose running around acting out the same story.

Oooh goooood.

You missed it, man. In the late '90s, there were tons of this stuff. And I was in my early teens, so I lapped it all up.

There were high school AUs. There were "they were kids who grew up in the same neighborhood" AUs. There were countless stories were Jack survived. Many involved he and Rose magically finding free accommodations in NYC. In one of them, they ran a bakery together! In another, he was conscripted and went missing in WWI, and Cal showed up and was all like, "oh yes, the Great War. Father made sure I wouldn't be drafted."

One of the ones I liked involved Rose and Jack having a falling out and Rose finding Ruth and Cal at the Waldorf. She went back to Philadelphia and wound up having a miscarriage. Very well-done. No idea if it's still out there somewhere.

EXACTLY. Ah, all the anime-themed Titanic slash AUs in the 90's. All my favorite things rolled into one package, how could I resist?
