Every single major character in LOTR is an adult.
Can't he just say he doesn't like modern adult subjects? That's just fine.

I think it's just that he always writes about modern subjects with kids so writing about adults would be in the same vein.
Mmm, but apparently he likes those adults and thinks spending time with them is neat? He just doesn't like writing about it. I dunno.
