Fandom-related rants - capslock rage

(Anonymous) 2013-08-11 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Post your rants here.

Dear fellow fans: YOU ARE NOT BEING ~OMG SUBVERSIVE FOR RELYING ON A DIFFERENT VERSION OF CANON. You come off as snobby and exclusionary, although I'm sure you don't mean to.

These are fucking stupid, but here's what has been plaguing me:

Why are there so many Randall/ofc (human) fics? And why do I want to read them?

Why do birds suddenly appear

Why can't I find any post Star Trek Into Darkness Kik/Spock fics that hit my narrative kinks?

[Insert more complaining about not being able to find fics I really care about in various other fandoms.]

Where is the Dr. Myers/Sam/Runner 5 fic for Zombies, Run!? It kinda sucks that I seem to be the only one who ships that OT3, while everyone seems to be creaming themselves over Radio Boyfriends, or just Sam/Runner 5. : /

Sam/Maxine feels way more BFF than sexual/romantic to me.

Now, Sam/Janine, on the other hand...

Eh, honestly I only ship those two if it's a triad relationship with 5, since I think all three of them bring something to the table in it - and those two wouldn't really work out without all three of those there. But that might be because we just don't see any interaction between the two without 5 involved.

Personally, Sam/Janine feels waaaaay too much like 'Scary dragon lady boss/employee' to me for me to ever really get behind shipping...But a little more variety pairing-wise in the fandom would awesome, wouldn't it?

And I can't 'ship Five/anyone, because s/he has no canon personality. All we know for certain is "runs well" and "has a mysterious military background." (Disclaimer: I am only 11 missions into Season 2; "we" may know more than I know at this point.) From mission events and other characters' reactions we can extrapolate things like "fearless," "tough as nails," "loyal," and "probably likeable" (and apparently "good with kids"; seriously, Game, why do you keep handing me kids and telling me to run?), but that's not enough for me to hang a character on. For me, reading fic that focuses on Five is basically reading about someone's OC, which doesn't appeal to me.

As for Sam/Janine, I get where you're coming from but I read their dynamic more as bickery coworkers who're on equal-ish footing than boss/employee. Even though Janine technically is higher on the food chain, Sam pushes back enough and gives her enough affectionate/gentle crap that I don't feel any real power imbalance between them.

I'm going to be completely honest here - I don't get why you replied to, since I seem to be getting a 'I don't like your pairings, they're bad!' vibe from you.

As for Same/Janine...I don't particularly care if other people ship them, but for me part of the issue is that Janine is like an old boss I had who played office politics and was the 'Scary Dragon Boss' stereotype - and that just disinclines me from really shipping her with anyone.

Then I apologize, because that's not what I intended at all.

More rant to self?

Stop getting swept up in stuff and caring for more than five minutes about really stupid things that aren't worth your time. No one else cares. It's not important. Get it together.

OP - I take your point, but... "more rants"? I'm rarely here lately and have posted exactly one rant to this comm. Idk if there's been a trend of them lately, or something.

I think that was meant more as "this is more of a rant to myself than a fandom-related rant", not directed at you :)

This is exactly it. I apologize for not being clear.
