Opinion: current smokers should not be allowed to raise children. Discuss.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-12 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Fact.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-12 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Why? And what about the ones who smoke outside/not around their kids?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-12 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
This. There's nothing to discuss, it's BS.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-12 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Most of them do though, so yeah.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-12 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Bullshit.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-12 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
No. I'm all for promoting healthy living, anon, but people don't get dropped from the gene pool just because of their bad habits. Sorry.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-12 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
Secondhand smoke.

I love the smell of eugenics in the morning.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-12 10:58 am (UTC)(link)
Smoking is a genetic trait now? The opinion in the OP may be extreme/assholish, but don't trivialize what has been done to "undesirable" ethnic groups and people with disabilities by comparing them to people with an addiction that endangers the health of others through secondhand smoke.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-12 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Nooope. I hate smoking, I think it's disgusting, but that's a dumb argument. I like drinking, and I would never tell a drinker they could've have children. Hell, even if they're alcoholics.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-12 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
No, we are not your essay writing material. Either give us your reasoning and thoughts on the matter or piss off

(Anonymous) 2013-08-12 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
Tell me how this would solve more problems than it would create.

Cite your sources.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-12 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
Bullshit. That's like saying current gun owners shouldn't be allowed to raise children, or current drinkers, or current BDSM fetishists, or whatever. It doesn't matter what you do that isn't kid-friendly, so long as you do it responsibly. Yes, a lot of people are too lazy, stupid, or entitled to be responsible, but they'd still be that way whether they had a smoking habit or not, and their kids would still suffer.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-12 11:01 am (UTC)(link)
Please explain how practicing BDSM is in any way comparable to smoking or gun ownership, activities which can and often do cause serious collateral physical harm to children in the home.

Somewhat biased since my mom developed asthma from secondhand smoke growing up, but yeah. I wouldn't forbid smokers from raising kids, but I'd definitely judge them if they smoked around them.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-12 12:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm with you on no smoking around kids. My parents are smokers, but they NEVER, ever, ever smoke(d) around us. That said, I've no idea whether it encourages the kids to smoke. I was turned off it, myself.

No. Gtfo.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-12 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
No. Eugenics is wrong. Fuck off.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-12 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
lololll

i think op is referring to the developmental health hazards, not ~eugenics~

(Anonymous) 2013-08-12 11:04 am (UTC)(link)
When did "smokers" become an ethnic group or other genetic trait? Trivializing atrocities with fallacious comparisons is also wrong.

deffo. secondhand smoke kills, donchaknow?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-12 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
My parents both smoked on and off during my childhood. Never inside the house, nothing I've owned has every smelled like cigarettes, I've never smoked, and it seriously irritates my throat anyway. So no? Difficulty overcoming addiction doesn't make you a bad parent? Fuck off?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-12 03:22 pm (UTC)(link)
The economic and social cost of taking children away from parents who smoke would eclipse any societal benefit of reduced second hand smoke exposure. There would simply not be enough suitable foster carers available for the children (especially older ones); and the resultant upsurge in deliquency, criminality, homelessness and substance abuse amongst those taken away from their parents would prove difficult and costly to contain. The net medical benefits would also probably be outweighed by the increase in psychiatric disorders and substance abuse.

Then, of course, there's the problem that if you take the children of smokers into care you're morally bound to also take children who are fed more sugar than is medically recommended. Type II diabetes is, after all, generally a bigger medical problem than passive smoking.

Ditto alcoholics. And video game addicts, and people with serious psychiatric conditions and life-threatening disabilities, owners of hunting rifles, swimming pools, power tools or large dogs, people who work with hazardous materials, police detectives, licensed drivers...hell, anyone who could conceivably do or own something or suffer from a condition that might possibly result in harm befalling their children, directly or indirectly. Which is to say, everybody.
