Wow this is really gross. I'M GLAD THERE'S NOT MUCH REPRESENTATION BECAUSE ME AND MY HOBBY.

As long as you're not darkening your skin for cosplay, it doesn't matter who you cosplay anyway.

Not OP

As much as I wish this was true, there actually are a number of people who will rip into someone whose white for cosplaying someone of a different race because it's disrespectful...or something. [Tbh, I never really understood their argument about how race meant you couldn't cosplay a character. : /]

Prime example: The Legend of Korra fandom

The first one is ick.
If you're dressing up as a character and going to con that usually means you LOVE them and appreciate them.

I don't get why someone would take offense to someone dressing up as Korra and going to a con. I really don't. Like how is that offensive at all?

I don't have a problem with the second link because it's set up as a 'fancast' so choosing a white cosplayer is... pretty stupid.

The first one is awful, but expected from the SJW of the Korra fandom. Actually AtlA is the one fandom in which I'd be kind of wary of cosplaying a POC, because it has the... largest sector of extreme SJWs.

I've been cosplaying since 2002, and the only people I've seen this from are SUPER HARDCORE SJW? OTOH I've seen a lot of black cosplayers get flack for cosplaying white characters.

(Anyway, no one seems to have a problem with white people cosplaying anime characters, which are Japanese most of the time?)

(Anonymous) 2013-08-12 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
I'm white, but I know who I'd prefer to be when considering the situation of cosplaying someone other than my race. STILL WHITE.

Boohoo, someone might criticise me for it. Probably for valid reasons. Woe is me.

Yeah this. White cosplayers definitely have it way easier in both the amount of white characters there are to cosplay and the way fans treat them. >.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-12 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
The only way in which I might disagree with this is that if someone is criticizing a non-white person for cosplaying a white character, you can be 100% sure that the critic is being an ass and you can ignore them with a clear conscience. Whether white people should cosplay non-white characters is actually something debated by rational people. There are several different positions on it represented in this thread.

Is it wrong for a white cosplayer to appropriate a non-white character? Is it wrong for a white cosplayer to not cosplay non-white characters, because it's othering? I don't know. I have no moral standing to make a judgment call here, and the people who do have a moral standing can't seem to agree on anything.

Hell, there is someone on another board I frequent who is at this very moment saying that white people shouldn't be allowed to dress as Cleopatra for Halloween because it's racist.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-12 07:12 am (UTC)(link)
Cleopatra was the great-great-great-etc-grandaughter of a Macedonian general and given her ancestors mostly married within their own family, the oddds she had Egyptian blood were...thin.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-12 05:56 pm (UTC)(link)
This really depends on which Cleopatra they want to represent. If it's the one with Julius and Anthony - she was Greek. But to SJWs the Greeks are probably PoC, too (along with Italians, lol).
