"Queer" was offensive about oooh 20 years ago in the western Anglosphere and started getting widely used about 10 years ago.

Where do you live where "homosexual" is an acceptable descriptor for queers? No queer/glbtiq person. I know will touch it with a bargepole; it is only used by ignorant or bigoted straight people, or very old crusty gay men.

Where I live, "homosexual" is the polite word. We use "gay" too, but it's an anglicism and is usually used to talk only about homosexual men. Homosexual women are "lesbianas" (the ones I know don't like to be called "gay"). "Homosexual" is used to talk about (gay) men and women. And straight people are "heterosexuales", there's no slang/informal word with the same meaning.

Ah, non-English-speaking. Forgive me. It's generally confronting and othering in the western Anglosphere.
