I think it depends on your area and your demographic, honestly. Here near Seattle, me and my under-20 friends use "gay" because "homosexual" sounds clinical and "queer" isn't something we ever hear being used.

Yeah, queer isn't universally used in my experience, gay is pretty common, though of course if you're bi or whatever it doesn't cover it, but I use gay a lot. Homosexual is clinical and like you have a condition. It's just used too much by bigots. I use "homo" sometimes in a jokey way, like "us filthy homos", but never to describe myself to strangers.
