you could try reading in a fandom that isn't 40 years old then?

Good point, but how much old fic - particularly stuff written before the internet - is there really floating around out there on the web?

I've never read anything pre-internet. I don't even think I'd want to, actually. But I would suspect a lot of older fandoms (older source or older fans?) feature this attitude, and ten years ago there was still a lot of fan activity online. I saw someone reading a 10 year old harry/draco ff.net fic on the bus a few weeks ago!
