Re: What do you think of the Olympics boycott?

eh. The problem is that I don't know what a boycott would do. You generally don't have to pay to watch on the US. Is my not paying attention going to somehow do anything? I don't pay any more attention to Olympic commercials than others--that's when I do silly shit on my laptop. And no way am I going to skip figure skating, one of the more pro gay men's sports. inam in fact going to be rooting for gay guys, if only to piss off Putin.

The sporting boycott deployed against South Africa in the 1980s was pretty effective, so I guess the hope is that similar action against Russia would force some policy changes.

Well yeah--countries can pull out. That's definitely an effective boycott.

I'm talking about what someone can do as a person who watches the Olympics.

Talk to McDonald's and Pepsi and all the other companies sponsoring the Olympics and say you're not going to buy their products as long as they sponsor this shit?

Just a tought.

Good luck with that, especially considering Pepsi makes a hell of a lot that doesn't say 'Pepsi' on it, and suggesting a McDonalds boycott to people on a low income can be laughable in some parts of the states.

I mean I agree with you, but ultimately a lot of these boycotts just result in people feeling a little better about themselves while absolutely nothing changes.

And this is why I love you.

I agree it's practically difficult, just saying it's not totally impossible to conceive of what you would do.

Well yeah, but I was talking about As Someone Just Viewing The Olympics. I don't think Angrily Not Watching Figure Skating is going to help a single Russian LGBT person.

Honestly, protest. Try to force NBC to actually discuss the controversy. That will do some good, and honestly I don't think it'll be hard to do.
