What do you think of the Olympics boycott?

[personal profile] dethtoll 2013-08-12 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
So there's been calls to boycott the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia given Russia's treatment of LGBT folk (up to and including saying they will arrest any athlete, as well as any NBC reporter interviewing any athlete, who is perceived as being pro-gay.)

There's also been a lot of counter-calls which mostly seem to be built on bullshit.

There's also a petition to move the Olympics to Vancouver, which is a nice idea but I think is too late.

Personally? I don't think boycotting Sochi is enough. I've always found the Olympics to be a dubious attempt at promoting a myth of egalitarianism and the triumph of the human spirit. It's bullshit. It's all bullshit. It's one of the most heavily sponsored sporting events in the world, dominated largely by white people, run by a cabal of extremely wealthy bureaucrats with a history of antisemitism, and is usually used as a springboard by host nations to ramp up oppression on their own citizens (and those of other nations.) On top of that, the Olympics is just like every other sporting event -- a massive waste of money that disproportionately goes into advertisers' pockets (and the stadiums themselves are big drains on tax dollars that could be better spent on things like improving schools and infrastructure, while whole neighborhoods of largely lower-income housing are razed to make room for these ridiculously huge complexes) to build a shrine to very specific physical skillsets, all in the name of a form of entertainment that teaches nothing, inspires nothing, and means nothing. Don't just boycott Sochi. Boycott the Olympics, period. And while we're at it, boycott the World Cup, the Superbowl, everything on down to regional high school basketball. Sports is a cancer.

That or you just made trolling an art form. And if that's the case, bravo.

eh. The problem is that I don't know what a boycott would do. You generally don't have to pay to watch on the US. Is my not paying attention going to somehow do anything? I don't pay any more attention to Olympic commercials than others--that's when I do silly shit on my laptop. And no way am I going to skip figure skating, one of the more pro gay men's sports. inam in fact going to be rooting for gay guys, if only to piss off Putin.

My view is that the appropriate thing to do is to boycott the commercial sponsors of the Olympics, and then to go to the Olympics in a sporting capacity and be as firmly and as unmistakeably pro-gay rights as possible. Combine some Jesse Owens / Tommie Smith / John Carlos shit, while also making the message as strong as possible that commercial support for the kind of anti-gay regime Russia has in place is totally unacceptable. I think that's a good balance between sending a message and trying to actually force people to change. I don't think it's the best course to stay entirely away from the games in a sporting capacity, because I think it provides a really, really great space to send a message from.

Don't agree with your general anti-sports message, though.

Related & interesting at least to me: article about how the cable TV stations recoup those ballooning payouts for viewing rights for the Olympics and other overpriced sporting events. [TW: opens by repeating (and then criticising) a shitty rape comparison.] tl;dr cut the cable.

Re: What do you think of the Olympics boycott?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-12 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Being a former "nonconformist" (I know, right?), I'm a bit cynical towards them, because usually half the people who say they're going to boycott don't, and it doesn't really go anywhere because of that.

Sports actually help the economy, and while they're not my thing... couldn't you make the same argument for concerts? Art shows? Movies? One person's interest is another person's apathy.

But back to the Olympics issue...what we should do is encourage our nation to demand protection of their own. It's not perfect, it doesn't help people in Russia but everyone shouldn't have to be scared. It breaks my heart to think of who won't play or who won't be able to invite loved ones. But boycotting the Olympics won't accomplish that, nor will boycotting all sports.

I'm sorry you didn't make the team. Yes, sports is bullshit. You totally shodve gotten a letter for science Olympiad. Football players are all dumb. Lacrosse is appropriation. We should keep kids from learning to play soccer, fandom is a far healthier outlet.

You know what's bullshit? Music. I hear rock stars Are jerks. Concert halls are a waste of resources. Boycott all band compeitions.

It seems like you have more of a problem with sports in general and the Olympics in particular than you do with what the Russian government is doing. Which is ridiculous considering sporting events on the whole don't generally advocate violence against people. What's happening in Russia right now is akin to the Olympics hosted in Nazi Germany and all nations should officially take a stand against the IOC for not moving the winter Olympics to another country and postponing if necessary to do that.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-12 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
...were the people who are boycotting actually gonna go to the event? Or were they going to not-go anyway? Because I cannot see much of a boycott happening. Outside of mentions on the internet here and there, the LGBT issues in Russia don't seem widely known

Re: What do you think of the Olympics boycott?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-12 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm trying to figure out why this post seems so unbelievably stupid to me when I really, really hate sports and think it has some good points. I think there are two ideas here:

Idea #1: Russia's treatment of LGBT people is really disgusting and we shouldn't let it slide. Maybe we can express that by boycotting the Olympics.

Idea #2: Competitive sports is an overhyped money vacuum draining resources from already under-resourced things at just about every level, from the high school library that doesn't get computers so they can redo the gym floor to a state government squeezing money out of imaginary sources to build another goddamn stadium to the public improvement projects that might have been done instead of building a World Cup facility.

My first problem with your argument is that these ideas have very little to do with each other, and I don't think tying them together does either of them any good.

Secondly, the vast majority of consumers of sports are going to laugh you off the stage when you say "sports is a cancer" and not listen to anything else you say. Anyone who agrees with you is probably effectively boycotting sports already. So what the hell good is this argument going to do?

I think the funding of sports is a pox on the school system, not the sports themselves. I was on several sports teams in high school, as well as part of the chess/biology/debate/robotics club - and guess which got the most external and internal support? Aaauuuugggh.

I lost all respect for you. Do you understand what Russia is doing to people? Do you get that people are being tortured and beaten to death? Do you understand that it's because of a corrupt and intolerant government that is sanctioning, no PRAISING, people attacking other so-called lesser people because of their sexual preference? I'm disgusted that your hatred of sports is more important to you than what's going on.

I agree with you to a point, but I'll admit I thought this was going to be more about the LGBT issues in Russia and less about the commercialism that only really helps out the 1%. Still, you lost me at the 'high school basketball' boycott. Someone else said it upthread: Sports in and of itself isn't bad, but it's the spectacle it's become that's gotten ridiculous.

I'd love to see us host the Olympics again in Vancity, and it's only been four years so I'd say we're still fit to, but sadly I don't see it happening even if that petition (which don't historically work anyway) got a billion signatures.

Ignoring the "sport is a cancer" stuff, I don't actually think boycotting the Olympics will work in this case. People seem to think that turning the channel to their favorite show will help keep it on air but that's not how ratings work. Not watching the Olympics won't have much of an effect.

Now, raising a shitstorm might do something, even if it's in the form of "say you'll boycott". It won't stop the Olympics from happening because it's such a hugely expensive event. I know lots of people wished we could just switch it to Vancouver because they so recently hosted, but Vancouver probably can't withstand it after the last Olympics.

But maybe such a shitstorm could cause lots of fall-out in terms of sponsors (if they're gutsy) and Olympians (if they care enough). I'm not sure what that would do really. I just know it would increase discussion and maybe change some minds... ugh. I feel it's hopeless.

I am in no way against sports, but I am depressed about our crumbling infrastructure. There's this bridge in Haverhill, Ma. It's over a hundred years old and won't last much longer without a lot of work-Flipping trains go over it...and it's over a river! The trains have to slow down to a crawl just to pass it. And that's just one of many, many, manyyyy things that need to be fixed/update around the country. :(
